A bobber stopper keeps the bait at the proper depth. The baitfish mingles with addled shad flushed through the gates, which is what attracts catfish and stripers to the area. Those who find a spot at the dam, however, often cast large floats across the current into an eddy that holds them right against the concrete structure. When water is being released the best time to fish the current demands at least a five-ounce sinker with a stout hook, or sometimes two, rigged at intervals two or three feet up the line, usually 20-pound plus. Dead ones are less effective, but still work. Live shad are dynamite baits for both catfish and striped bass. Hooking one of these fragile fish anywhere else, kills it right away. Although a few anglers cut their bait before putting it on a hook, most serve up live shad hooked behind the head or through the lips. 1 bait at Webbers Falls is the gizzard shad, which seems to always be within throwing distance of a cast net. When the area is crowded, long stretches of shoreline will be decorated with enough 12- to 14-foot rods to stock a tackle store. Otherwise, find a vacant boulder if you can someplace downstream. You'll probably be sharing it with a bunch of fellow fishermen. The best place to set up shop is on a log jam right against the dam. You've got to scramble down a steep slope of rip-rap to find a fishing spot. 64.Īlthough the Corps once built concrete walkways from the parking area to the water, floods have left them mostly in ruin. The Webbers Falls tailwaters access area is near the Corps of Engineers powerhouse, about five miles southeast of the town of Webbers Fall. A 44-pounder came from the Arkansas near the Webbers Falls Dam in 1981 and the current record, a 46-pounder, was taken at the mouth of the Illinois River a few miles downstream in 1985. The last two state record stripers were caught in the area. The Arkansas River System, of which Webbers Falls is a part, also seems to harbor the largest striped bass in the state. Another kind of catfish, locally identified as the Mississipi white, is also numerous in the river. Five- to 10-pound catfish are the rule, but blues and flatheads topping 50 pounds are not uncommon. If a critter is big enough to gulp down a live gizzard shad, it's going to be big enough to put on a stringer. You may connect with only four or five fish in a day's time, but you won't be disappointed by the quality. If you can't handle a surf rod, throw a cast net, fight the current and fish around the clock from a wobbly log jam or a pile of slick rocks, go elsewhere.īut if you're up to the task, this is the place to tangle with Arkansas River catfish big enough to swallow your leg or, if you're really lucky, latch onto a state record striped bass. This is not a good place for family fishing. Fishing the turbulence below Webbers Falls Lock and Dam separates the men from the boys in a hurry.
